In 2017 I was invited to make David Shrigley's commission for the Folkestone Triennial, an exhibition of public sculpture. Shrigley and I travelled to Folkestone together where I was instructed to look at one of the existing Victorian lampposts for forty seconds. I made rough drawings from memory, which we turned into scale drawings at Shrigley’s studio.
At Powderhall Bronze Foundry in Edinburgh, I sculpted the full-scale version of these sketches in clay. Kenny Hunter taught me clay modelling techniques and the foundry team assisted with making tools to get the most true version of the lamppost from my memory. We cast the lamppost from multiple molds in aluminium, which was welded together and painted. It was installed amongst the other lamppost on the leas. It has since been acquired by Creative Folkestone and is on permanent display.
